Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider, meaning I do not accept insurance at this time. As an out-of-network provider I am able to better customize your needs and care with more freedom and flexibility.

How do I learn more about my out-of-network benefits?

Contact your customer services number on the back of your insurance card to learn about your coverage and out of pocket costs. Questions you can ask your insurance representative include:

  1. Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health coverage?

  2. What is my out-of-network deductible?

  3. What is my co-insurance rate for outpatient psychotherapy (% of reimbursement per session)?

  4. How many outpatient therapy sessions are allowed per calendar year?

  5. Am I eligible for coverage under the “2008 Timothy’s Law?” (This allows some members access to unlimited therapy sessions if they meet criteria for a biological based diagnosis)

  6. Do you require prior authorization for out-of-network outpatient therapy sessions? If so, please provide them with the date of the first session and our billing information below:

Rachel Rifkin Mental Health Counseling, PLLC

    Rachel Rifkin, LMHC

    NPI: 1023661717

    Tax ID: 84-4883866

  7. What is the process for submitting claims — Mail, Fax, or Online? Be sure to write down the proper address they provide for submitting.

  8. I will provide you with monthly super-bills that will include all of the necessary information for your claims to be processed.

I’ve never been in therapy before, what should I expect?

Starting (or resuming) therapy can be daunting. I hope to ease that process as much as possible. We will start with a free 15 minute consultation call to get a better sense of what’s prompting you to reach out at this time, what you think you may want (or not want) in a therapist, and in turn I will give you a little blurb about myself and my practice. If it seems like a good match, we move forward with scheduling an initial session!

What if I don’t think it’s working out?

I always tell folks to give any new therapist a few sessions before deciding if it feels like the right fit. I am always open to feedback to see if there is room for growing together as a therapeutic alliance. If for any reason you or I believe I am not the right fit for your needs at this time, that’s okay! Therapists are not one size fits all. I will always provide you with referrals for other therapists who might be a better fit at this time. It’s important to “shop” around for therapists to see what works best for you!

What do you specialize in?

I specialize in eating disorders within the queer community. Within that includes training and experience in trauma, identity, anxiety, depression, family dynamics, and general mental health. I follow an anti-racist and culturally humble lens with all clients. I work with adults, adolescents, couples, and families.
